Description

For many years, the San Rafael and Dick Smith wildernesses haven't received the care needed to keep them in good condition. Partly this is due to the lack of funding the Forest Service needs to provide work in the backcountry areas. Partly it is due to the difficulty of gaining access to some of the more remte areas. And partly it is due to the number of severe winters we have experienced over the past ten years or so. The LPFA initiated the Wilderness Project a number of years ago to help support the Forest Serice in the care of the wilderness areas. Leaders Mike Smith, Jasonn Beckstrand and Ray Ford will be offering monthly projects in 2007 that will allow you to get back into some of the remote wilderness areas and help us rebuild trail that in many cases hasn't been worked for a decade or more. We offer a variety of experiences ranging from car camping projects that will take you back to the historic Manzana Schoolhouse to overnight excursions off the Sierra Madres and down into the depths of the Sisquoc River to high country projects in the San Rafael Mountains. Come join us!

Additional Participant Information

No training is needed though you should be in good physical condition and experienced in overnight and backpack type camping. See attached documents in the specific event in the calendar to get more information related to that event.

General Timeframe

The Wilderness Project is ongoing and we will be sponsoring a project on the average of once a month for the back country areas.
